UC Davis experts weigh in on swine flu H1N1 virus threat

As researchers scramble to make sense of the new H1N1influenza virus that is spreading across the globe,the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported encouraging signs last Sunday on the outbreak’s severity,but kept a wary stance on how the virus will behave in the future.

Students gather for 28th annual ‘Take Back the Night’ on the Quad

Over500students and community members gathered at the front of the Memorial Union Monday night as UC Davis held its28thannual “Take Back the Night.“ The event,which was sponsored by Students Against Sexual Violence (SASV),a group within the Campus Violence Protection Program,has become an international tradition since its inception in1976,said Amanda Smith,vice president of SASV and the director for the event.

Regents to vote on 9.3 percent increase in student fees

Starting this summer,annual fees for residential full-time undergraduates will likely cost$9,357.95,up from this year’s$8,638.60. The UC Office of the President’s (UCOP) Committee on Finance will present the proposal for the fee increase to the UC Board of Regents at their meeting on Thursday from9a.m.to1p.m.

Prop 1F would prevent raises during a deficit

California voters will decide on May19if elected officials deserve pay raises in a time of economic decline. Proposition1F would amend the California Constitution to prevent elected state officials from receiving raises in deficit years.The measure defines deficit years as when the state’s reserve fund has a deficit larger than1percent of the state’s general fund revenues.

New research may lead to advancements in nutrition and milk production

National bicycle museum could replace Davis teen center

The possibility of a bike museum moving into a space currently occupied by the teen center has some concerned about the future of teen programs in Davis. City leaders are advocating for the U.S.Bicycling Hall of Fame to be located in a city-owned building on Third and B Streets,where the teen center is currently located.Teen center staff are not thrilled about the prospect of losing their space,however.

DNA of UCD

Popular nutrition professor Liz Applegate hasn’t left UC Davis since she came here as a student in the1970s. Born in a nunnery in South Africa,Applegate’s family of nine children moved around a lot for her father’s chemistry researchbefore finally settling in the Bay Area.She attended UC Davis for both undergraduate and graduate school,received her Ph.D.in nutrition science in1983and started teaching right after.

Dixon May Fair open Thursday through Sunday

City council approves energy efficiency programs

In its continued push to make Davis environmentally sustainable,the Davis City Council approved two programs allowing homeowners and new homebuyers to make their homes more energy efficient. Both programs are part of a greater effort by the council to adopt greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets for the city of Davis.
