Vehicle travel over holiday season up, AAA says

Many feel an upturn in the economy is on the horizon after a AAA study showed an 8 percent increase in holiday travel from last year. The AAA Northern California report indicates Californians may be willing to travel more than usual, especially during the holidays.

State regulates TV energy consumption

California began fighting the battle against global warming on a new front this month, with the California Energy Commission’s new regulation to reduce energy consumption of power-guzzling TVs. In a 5-0 vote on Nov. 18, the commission set new energy efficiency standards for TVs sold in California to take effect on Jan. 1, 2011. Although the vote was unanimous, the regulation is opposed by the Consumer Electronics Association but lauded by power utilities.

Welcome back, loves. Hope you all had a wonderful break. For some of you, the break meant heading back to your hometowns for some much needed family time. For others, it meant stuffing your faces with a silo’s worth of food. For me, however, the break meant a long weekend away from my boyfriend Arthur. Since I’m so used to sleeping in the same full-size bed with him every night, you can imagine how difficult it was for me to endure a twin-size mattress alone.

Have you ever had a really great idea you just can’t stop thinking about? Well, I sure do. Here it is: terraforming the moon. Every time I read about some foolhardy, quasi-scientific endeavor, I bang my spoon on the table in unparalleled fury. Don’t these people know they could be engineering a renewable atmosphere on the moon right now? The earth isn’t going to last forever!

Chancellor to discuss impact of budget

Chancellor Linda Katehi will meet with the campus today to hear and respond to the concerns of students faced with fee increases. The Fall Dialogue with the Chancellor will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Activities and Recreation Ballroom. Katehi and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Enrique Lavernia will address the UC Davis budget and the effects it will have on campus.

Budget cuts affect new mothers on campus

Got milk? New mothers at UC Davis and their infants will lose access to hospital grade breast pumps on campus. Due to the budget crisis, Human Resources will discontinue the Breastfeeding Support Program at the end of June 2010.

Behind the gates of the Primate Center

The walls are gray, concrete-like and bare. In front sits a receptionist behind a wall of glass that rises to the length of the ceiling. This is the entrance to the California National Primate Research Center, located on campus at UC Davis. The CNPRC was established in 1962 and is one of eight national primate research centers. Throughout its existence, the primate center has focused on developing research while at times has been the source of controversy and debate raised by animal rights groups.

Aggie defense makes strides

In UC Davis’ home-opening 88-59 win over UC Santa Cruz, the Aggies put on an offensive and defensive clinic. The Aggies out-rebounded the Banana Slugs 50-32, forced 23 turnovers and four players scored in double figures.
