Men’s track and field sets three school records over break

Highlighted by hurdlers on the last day of break,the men’s track and field team put forth some solid marks in both Sacramento and down in Los Angeles. Mar.21 – Hornet Invite (Sacramento State) Junior Ray Green highlighted the meet for the Aggies,winning the triple jump with a mark of15.03m to qualifyfor the regional championships.

Local jobless rate jumps to 12 percent

Yolo County’s unemployment rate reached12percent in February,the second consecutive month in double digits,according to figures released by the Employment Development Department. The number surpasses both the California rate of10.5percent and the national average of8.1percent.In other words,nearly one in eight members of the adult workforce in the county is looking for work.

Four more Aggies qualify for regionals

While the rest of us were recovering from finals,the UC Davis track and field team was keeping busy with four meets over spring break,competing at Sacramento State,Stanford and UCLAwhile also hosting a home meet. Mar.21 – Hornet Invite (Sacramento State) Junior Chid Onyewuenyi stole the show with her dominating win in the hammer throw.Her55.92m toss easily surpassed the regional qualifying mark and shattered the old school record.

FEMA updates Yolo County flood maps

Homeowners in Yolo County might want to look into their existing flood insurance plan. Yolo County announced last month that FEMA would be reevaluating the existing flood maps in the area.Due to this restructuring,many Yolo County residents will now be placed in high-risk flood zones.

Science researchers across the U.S.received good news earlier this month when President Barack Obama reversed a ban preventing federal funding for stem cell research.The ban,which was put into place in2001by former president Bush,limited taxpayer money to the21lines of embryos produced before2001.

Editorial: Downtown smoke shops

When a smoke shop opened up in the historic and highly visible Anderson Bank Building on the corner of Second and G Streets this month,some Davis residents raised their eyebrows in disdain.Concerned about what some saw as thinly disguised drug paraphernalia,the Davis City Council took note and discussed the possibility of creating an ordinance that would limit the ability of smoke shops to set up in prime spaces downtown.

Aggies go 2-4 during break

After dropping nine of13games,the UC Davis softball team returned to its early-season form to go4-1at the NIST Tournament. It looked to keep that hot streak alive over spring break as it began play with a commandingwin over Cal State Bakersfield. The Aggies then had two tough games with No.23Fresno State before closing out the weekend by taking one game in a series with defending Big West Conference champion Long Beach State.

Wrestling has solid showing at NCAA Championships

The Aggies finished up their season Mar.19and20at the NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center in St.Louis,Mo. Before the Championships,coach Lennie Zalesky said it’s hard to know what to expect heading into the national tournament. “It’s hard to have expectations,” Zalesky said. “Anything can happen.“

Women’s golf finishes fifth at Duck Invitational

Heading into the final day of competition at the Duck Invitational on Tuesday,the Aggies sat firmly in fifth place – six strokes out of fourth,12out of sixth. The Aggies would keep it that way.

The NCAA Swimming Championships is the fastest collegiate swim meet in the country. Athletes from all over the world train day in and day out in hopes of being fast enough to even qualify for the meet in College Station, Tex.

Unitrans receives $4.5 million boost from stimulus, local funds

President Barack Obama’s federal stimulus plan ranges all the way from state governments to local transit agencies,and Unitrans stands to benefit from nearly$2million. Geoff Straw,general manager of Unitrans,said all the money will gotoward25new clean-burning buses to take the place of25older buses eligible for replacement by the end of2010.
