Women’s tennis falls to Cal Poly, Long Beach State, knocks off Montana

With only one week left to play before the Big West Tournament,the UC Davis women’s tennis team needed to prove that it belonged in the conversation with the conference’s best. The Aggies (11-10,2-6)came up short ofmeeting that goal,losing at home to conference heavy hitters Cal Poly (13-7,6-1) and Long Beach State (14-6,8-0),6-1and5-2,respectively.

New eligibility requirements could mean fewer Asians at UC

The new UC eligibility requirements have sparked an uproar with some Asian American community leaders,who say the change will cause a decline in the university’s Asian American population. Chinese for Affirmative Action is among several national advocacy organizations that have expressed concern over the eligibility changes.The organization has suggested that the new eligibility requirements could cause “unintentional whitening” of UC.

Six games in six days – the busiest stretch of the UC Davis baseball team’s season is over. There may not be anybody more relieved than coach Rex Peters. “It was a very busy week,and you always worry if you have enough pitching to getthrough a week like that,” Peters said.“We’re past it now,so hopefully we can move forward into the lighter part of our schedule where it will be less taxing on our pitching staff.“

Giardia parasite found in Davis dogs

A parasitic disease associated with backpackers drinking brackish water has recently been on the mind of the animal community in Davis. At the end of last month,Yolo County warned in a press release that giardia,an intestinal parasite found in humans and animals,had been found in four dogs from a Davis rescue shelter kennel.

A recent survey by Rasmussen Reports,a public opinion polling company,found that30percent of American young adults aged18to29believe satirical news programs such as “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” are taking the place of traditional news outlets. Although it is unlikely that such programs alone will run mainstream media outlets out of business,their popularity is worth considering.

Controversial agricultural pest detected in Davis

An agricultural pest that caused an environmental uproar on the California coast in 2008 may have made its way to Davis. Yolo County officials announced last week that they found a single light brown apple moth in a monitoring trap in South Davis.
