When:Friday and Saturday,all day; Saturday at10:30a.m. Who to watch:When Will Guthrie and Robert Neely get into their blocks for the100m,they will be the first Aggie decathletes to compete at the Big West Championships. While the main contingent will contest the conference championships a week later,Guthrie and Neely are looking to put some early points on the board to give the Aggies a shot at a Big West title. “I’m very excited going into Big West,” said Guthrie. “This will be my first decathlon that actually counts for something.The goal is to score some points for the team and get us started off right in conference.“

Russ Pfaff is enjoying a breakout sophomore year for the UC Davis track and field team,leading the team in the3,000m steeplechase.Entering the season with a personal record well off the regional qualifying time of9:07.00,Pfaff shattered that time on Apr.24at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley.In taking second in that race,he clocked an8:48.81to not only move to second all-time at UC Davis,but to also move to No.2in the West Region and No.9in the nation.

So I guess we’re in some sort of digital revolution.Whatever.I like the Internet a lot,iPods are funand so are microwaves and Bagel Bites.Way to go on those things,technology.But there are some ways in which technology makes me want to go Thoreau my cell phone into Walden Pond.One of those ways is Amazon’s Kindle2.0. More like,I want to turn it into kindling for a fire and watch it burn! Forever.

Public attention for the past week has been centered on the H1N1swine flu virus and its potential pandemic effects.Despite what the ubiquitous news coverage and conversations would lead you to believe,many experts says the virus is currently no more dangerousthanthe regular flu virus. While H1N1may be unnerving because it emerged after flu season,scientists at a forum at UC Berkeley on Monday stressed that it is no more infectious thanthe regular flu and urged calm.

With the mixed musical styles of former Bright Eyes front man Conor Oberst and the full-throttled folk back-up from Mystic Valley Band also come mixed feelings. The band’s sophomore albumOuter South,which was released on May5,is not for creatures of habitual bouts of quivering melodies and nervous serenades,as most Oberst fans have become accustomed to.While Oberst has consistently shown an ability to evolve in unexpected ways,this change is not for the better.

Asian American Association brings uncommon films to campus

UC Davis‘ Asian American Association is in the middle of hosting its annual film festival.The event,which kicked off on May5,continues until May15.The films run Tuesdays,Thursdays and Fridays each week.

Annual KDVS fundraiser an “overall success”

After a full week of avid fundraising from Apr.20to26,campus radio station KDVS90.3FM raised$56,375,just shy of their$60,000goal. The online pledge system is still up and active,continuing to accept and receive donations.Currently,the station has raised$58,745and continues to receive pledges fromfundraiser.kdvs.org.
