SportsSeptember 24, 2009
By finishing second at last year’s Big West Championship and sending representatives to the NCAA Finals and the U.S.Women’s Open, the UC Davis women’s golf team has set the expectations high for this season. Coach Anne Walker doesn’t think that will be a problem.

Oversimplification and condemnation

There’s nothing like the feel of elitism.Whether it’s a road bicyclist sneering at a passing fixter’s inferior gear ratio or a shaven swimmer scolding a newbie in a lap lane, elitism gives people a real edge to hone – especially in these times of ingenuous mediocrity. My favorite elitist outlet is music. That’s probably why I’m the California Aggie’s arts editor now. After writing multiple hasty album reviews about why I’m better than Weezer,Dragonforce or Mims,I had to get somewhere, right?

“How did you get a green one?” Janna Tolla, director of the Recreation Pool and one of my supervisors, looks incredulously at the color of my vest last week at the UC Davis Fire and Police Department’s safety drill. “Don’t worry,I’m just covering the story,” I said.

Inside the numbers: UC Davis football

SportsSeptember 24, 2009
There are some of us out there that can name each of the past five World Series Most Valuable Players, their average during the series and the number of RBI they had during the four-to seven-game stretch. There are others of us who can recall how many Super Bowls the Buffalo Bills have been to and what their record is in those games (sorry,Bills fans, but you’re0-5).

Growing pains characterize early part of season

SportsSeptember 24, 2009

The 2009 version of the squad, however, hasn’t had as much luck as in past years to start its season. With a 26-man roster consisting of a mere nine upperclassman, a learning curve is to be expected but after two straight years of NCAA tournament appearances, a 2-5 record to start the season is difficult to get used to.
