Science & TechnologyApril 27, 2011
When we stare at the stars, what do we see? Our eyes only see the billions upon billions of tiny lights, indicative of the simultaneously destructive and life-giving force of nuclear fusion occurring millions of light years away.

Cache Creek Nature Preserve (CCNP) is a microcosm of California history. Native Americans, farmers, miners and environmentalists have fought and cooperated for rights to use this 130-acre space. Only 25 minutes from Davis, it’s an accessible place to get away for an afternoon and learn about riparian habitats. Throughout the 20th century, however, mining the creek’s gravel reserves took precedence. Machines and open pits dominated the landscape, extracting gravel to fuel suburban construction. Today, some of those same mining companies fund the Cache Creek Conservancy’s restoration effort.

Column: Interviewing secrets

OpinionApril 27, 2011
It’s the season for summer internships/post-grad job applications, and that means upcoming interviews. Interviewing used to terrify me – I’m not the best public speaker in the world. But after prepping many others for interviews and being the interviewer as well as the interviewee, I figured out how to handle any curveball from a potential employer.

Column: Forever 21 done right

OpinionApril 27, 2011
Since its University Mall debut at the beginning of the month, Forever 21 has quickly become a Davis hot spot: Many have walked through its huge shiny doors in hopes of finding stylish new additions to their wardrobe. Three years ago – when a less fabulous first-year Mario lived in Cuarto and bought stuff from the old Gottschalks – a tapioca milk tea from The Old Teahouse was the hottest accessory a U-Mall patron could sport. Now, Forever 21’s infamous yellow plastic bags are all the rage and hang from the wrist of every satisfied customer.

Though the words, “I’m so sorry for your loss” may be comforting to some, for senior English major Ashley Chandler, the line is overused and meaningless.
