UC Davis goes 0-2 in Fresno
SportsMarch 31, 2008
The UC Davis men’s tennis team gave new meaning to the phrase break point as they returned to play this past weekend. The Aggies not only returned after a three-week break, but their hopes
of victory were broken as they first fell to DePaul 5-2 on Friday and
were later swept 7-0 by No. 52 Fresno State. Friday – DePaul 5, UC Davis 2 The Aggies saw their hot play turn ice cold against the Blue Demons, falling 5-2 to end a two-match winning streak. Against DePaul I felt like I was a little bit slow, I wasn’t really
playing at the top of my game, said senior No. 3 Justin Garcia. We were
just a bit sluggish.
The rites of Spring
OpinionMarch 31, 2008
Spring is here, which means its time to start using the Quad again. The
muddy puddles of winter are finally gone! As overjoyed as I am that I
can once more diagonally tread across the grass in suede shoes, I can’t
help but feel a little uneasy about using the Quad during the spring. Sure, the sunshine and warm temperatures make the Quad appear as a kind
of springtime oasis away from suffocating classrooms devoid of light.
But the Quad also has a seedy underbelly that only appears when
temperatures hit 75. Just wait until you hear about the dark side of
the Quad, a place that leads to drug use, sex, violence and
under-the-table money deals!
Strong opposition stalls Chevron’s upgrades to Richmond refinery
City NewsMarch 31, 2008
The
city of Richmond’s planning commission is in the middle of a
contentious debate about approving the renovation of a Chevron oil
refinery that has sat on the Bay Area city shores for over 100 years. After hearing over five hours of public comment at its
standing-room-only Mar. 20 meeting, the planning commission scheduled a
special meeting for Apr. 10 to continue receiving public input. The
commission will then vote on whether to approve the Environmental
Impact Report (EIR) and conditional use permit, allowing the project to
proceed. In April 2005, Chevron applied to Richmond for permission to proceed
with its proposed $1 billion equipment upgrade, which includes
replacing the existing hydrogen plant, power plant and reformer.

Yeah, so like, I met this guy at the bookstore when I was going there
to buy books for my classes. He was pretty tall and, I’m not sure, but
he looked sort of Asian, you know? Like he was half or something. You
could sort of tell. You know what I mean? Anyway, he was in the English section and he asked me what class I was
taking and I was like, UWP 1, and he was like, You an English major?
and I was like, No, I have to take it because it’s required, and he was
like, Ah, I see, and I was like, Yeah, I don’t really like reading.
Apparently he didn’t like that because he gave me this look, and I was
like, Sorry? but I didn’t really say that.

Orozco advances, loses on second day at NCAA Championships
SportsMarch 31, 2008
Going into the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships this year, head coach Lennie Zalesky knew it was going to be tough. UC Davis was only able to send three wrestlers – juniors Marcos Orozco, Nexi
Delgado and Tyler Bernacchi – to the national tournament Mar. 20 to 22
at the Scottsdale Center in St. Louis, Mo. But Zalesky was still optimistic, especially about one particular
wrestler. I think we can surprise some people with Marcos, he said. And that’s exactly what Orozco did.
Foundation asks Davis residents to help local schools
City NewsMarch 31, 2008
A dollar a day for one year. That’s what the Davis Schools Foundation is asking Davis residents to
give to support local K-12 education. Its leaders are hoping to raise
enough money to compensate for a $4.25 million cut in the Davis Joint
Unified School District’s (DJUSD) budget for 2008-2009. School district trustees are grappling with how to deal with the nearly
6 percent reduction in the budget. They have already voted to shut down
Valley Oak Elementary School and are considering closing Emerson Junior
High School. They have also notified 112 teachers and administrators
that they could lose their jobs.
Dissent over gang injunction continues
City NewsMarch 31, 2008
The Yolo County District Attorney’s office re-filed for a July gang injunction although the court overturned it in April 2007. Jeff Reisig, Yolo County District Attorney, placed a gang injunction to
prevent gang activity in West Sacramento in February 2005. The district attorney is saying that this place is horrible and that
there is so much crime and that people are afraid to speak up and get
out of their homes, said attorney Josh Kaizuka.

Spring break is over, and I return to Davis having recognized one
thing: My grandparents are extremely well-versed in separate areas of
knowledge. My grandma, Adriana Monteforte, knows marinara sauce, while my grandpa, Vincenzo Monteforte, knows politics. But as knowledgeable as they are in their respective areas, whenever
the topic of UC Davis athletics comes up, the room gets quiet as if I
just name-dropped Mussolini.
