Editorial: SF congestion fee

The streets of San Francisco may become costly for drivers. The San Francisco County Transportation Authority recently released a study concerning the implementation of a congestion pricing plan in high-traffic areas.If put into action,the plan would charge drivers a$3fee for driving in and out of the city’s congested areas during weekday peak-hours.

City wants more options for large North Davis development

The owners of the largest plot of undeveloped land in Davis want to develop it into a mix of housing and industrial office space.The Davis City Council,however,is not so keen on the idea of giving it up for housing.The roughly100-acre site,known as Cannery Park,is located north of Covell Boulevard and east of F Street.For38years it was the site of a cannery operation but has been vacant since1999.Lewis Planned Communities,the current owner,has been working for four years on a plan to construct610residential units and20acres of business park offices.

Bruce White to be new College of Engineering dean

Bruce White,professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering,has been chosen to be the new dean of the College of Engineering.He will hold the position for the next three years starting next month. White will replace the current dean,Enrique Lavernia,who has been tasked to fill the role of the campus’s provost and executive vice chancellor.

New engineered rice can survive under floodwaters

The final stage in testing new varieties of rice that can withstand harsh flooding conditions has been successfully completed in India and Bangladesh. Researchers at UC Davis,UC Riverside and the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines proved that flood tolerance can be bred into any rice plant by introducing a single gene.The breeding strategy has broad implications for health and livelihood in flood prone regions of the world where rice is a dietary staple.
