UC Davis team discovers genes for frost tolerance in wheat

The worldwide food shortage and prices are expected to continue increasing until at least 2010, forcing the United Nations World Food Program to take precautionary measures, according to an article on allheadlinenews.com. Data from the UN program suggest that the prices of some food items have drastically increased by 40 percent last year in some nations. The global food reserves have also decreased from 169 food-aid days in 2007 to 53 days this year, the lowest in 30 years.

Study finds more fast-food options lead to more obesity

Where you live may have a serious impact on your weight and health, according to a statewide study released last week. Using data on the locations of retail food outlets and the health statistics of 40,000 Californians, researchers found that people who have easier access to fast-food and convenience stores than grocery and produce outlets are more likely to suffer from obesity and diabetes.

Spring Wellness Extravaganza to be held today on the Quad

The first annual Spring Wellness Extravaganza takes place today on the Quad. Hosted by Cowell Student Health Center’s Health Education and Promotion, in conjunction with the East Quad Farmer’s Market, the event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and be accompanied by 14 other campus organizations.

My roommate Yvette was out at dinner with our friend Carrie, and I was waiting for them to return so we could figure out what our Friday night adventures would entail. So I went through the usual motions – did the dishes, read a few pages of a magazine and finally noticed that our trash can was getting rather full. So I took out the trash, and well … came back with a cat.
