Disturbing the peace
SportsMarch 17, 2008
Women’s basketball in the Big West Conference had become monotonous. In the 2005-2006 season, UC Riverside finished first, and UC Santa
Barbara took second. In 2006-2007, UC Riverside finished first and UCSB
took second. Entering this season, the media and coaches predicted that
UC Riverside would finish first and UCSB would take second. Women’s basketball in the Big West Conference had become monotonous, but it is no longer.

Carnival to be held at Cannery Park in April
City NewsMarch 17, 2008
Despite a $4 million budget cut, Emerson Junior High School will be taking a joyride on the Ferris wheel. The Davis Planning Commission recently approved a temporary carnival
that will take place Apr. 10. This four-day carnival, run by Butler
Amusements, will operate at Cannery Park on East Covell Boulevard and J
Street as a fundraiser for the Emerson Junior High Parent Teacher
Association. It will be a community benefit and a community activity, said Greg
Clumpner, chairperson of Davis Planning Commission. We didn’t feel
there are any significant impacts for preventing [the fundraiser] from
happening.

All salmon fishing likely to be stopped for 2008 season
City NewsMarch 17, 2008
There is a good chance there won’t be any wild-caught salmon in California this year. The Pacific Fisheries Management Council adopted three options for
public review regarding the 2008 salmon season off the coast of
California and Oregon at its conference in Sacramento on Friday. Two of the options would completely shut down salmon fishing due to
unprecedented low numbers of returning salmon. The council will adopt
its final decision in early April after hearing public comment. The concern focuses around California’s Central Valley rivers in which
only an estimated 59,100 chinook salmon will spawn this fall – a number
that falls far short of the minimum conservation goal of 122,000.
A high-altitude spring break lies on the horizon

There
are a number of ways a 20-year-old could use $30,000. A new car, for
instance, or maybe a college fund. However, Tanner Bixler, a junior
economics major, has been raising $30,000 for a different cause – to
climb Mount Everest. On Mar. 27, Bixler will be embarking on a journey he has been dreaming
about since he summited Alaska’s Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain
in North America, at the age of 16. At that time, the San Diego, Calif.
native was invited to climb Everest, but his high school had no
intention of allowing him to skip school and ruin his chances of
attending college.
Superdelegates may play ‘super’ role
City NewsMarch 15, 2008
As Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)continues
to enjoy a surge of momentum generated by 11 consecutive primary and
caucus election victories over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY),
questions persist over the role Democratic superdelegates will play in
determining the party’s eventual nominee. The approximately 796 unpledged party leaders and elected official
delegates (PLEO delegates), who are free to cast their own votes at the
Democratic National Convention in August, could play the role of
tiebreaker if neither Obama nor Clinton emerges carrying the magic
number of 2,025 pledged delegates. Currently, Clinton leads Obama in
the superdelegate count, 241-181, according to a recent Associated
Press survey.

UCD researchers hypothesize cause of breast cancer drug resistance in some patients
Campus NewsMarch 14, 2008
UC
Davis Cancer Center researchers have found a probable explanation for
some tumor cells’ resistance to the breast cancer drug trastuzumab,
commonly known by its designer name Herceptin. Herceptin targets the protein HER2, which is a receptor of tyrosine kinase, an enzyme that encourages cancer cell growth. In a Mar. 1 study published in Cancer Research by David Shattuck, Jamie
K. Miller, Kermit L. Carraway III and Colleen Sweeney, initial results
conclude that another molecule known as a MET receptor can act
similarly to HER2 in some HER2-positive breast cancer patients, thus
inhibiting Herceptin’s effectiveness.
