Event: Fullerton Open
Where: Titan Gym, Fullerton, Calif.
When: Saturday, all day
Who to watch: Junior Abe Otrambo placed fourth last year in the Pac-10 Championships.
Otrambo’s overall record for conference matches was 8-4. He was also second on the team with four pins.
The Anaheim, Calif. native was recently selected to wrestle Sunday in the 44th Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic.
Did you know? On the Aggies’ roster there are six returning wrestlers. Five of them were unable to compete, four due to injury in the first matchup of the season; a loss against No. 17 Arizona State.
Preview: UC Davis will be trying to bounce back from the loss to the nationally-ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State when they travel to Titan Gym for the Fullerton Open Saturday.
The young group of Aggies was able to fight through adversity against the Sun Devils, claiming two individual wins on the match.
One victory came from redshirt junior Ricky Alcala, wrestling at 285-pounds, as he defeated Eric Nye by a score of 4-3.
197-pound Rory McBryde was also victorious for the Aggies, marking the first win of his UC Davis career.
Considering so many guys were out on injury, coach Lenny Zalesky feels that his team fought hard and was pleased with the individual performances.
Zalesky hopes that the five returning Aggies who did not compete in the season-opener will be healthy for Saturday’s event at Cal State Fullerton.
