Energy commission grants $2M to West Village development

After weeks of dismal budget updates,UC Davis got a bit of good news last week.The California Energy Commission announced a grant of nearly$2million to support the development of the West Village community housing project. University officials say the grant,which totals$1,994,322,will help planners analyze,design and implement new energy technologies with the ultimate goal of having a “zero net energy” community.

A change in wording can make all the difference,as post-9/11veterans recently discovered.Under the new GI Bill,formally known as Chapter33,the U.S.Department of Veterans Affairscoversstudent fees.This was a problem for private university students,who are generally charged “tuition” rather than fees,because assistance to private university students is based on how much assistance public university students receive.

UCSD professors suggest closing UCs

With California’s hard-hitting budget cuts this summer, some are proposing drastic changes for the University of California system. Before UC President Mark Yudof met with the Board of Regents July 16, 23 department chairs from UC San Diego wrote a letter to Yudof suggesting possible methods to aid UC. The most controversial suggestion: shut down UC Merced, Santa Cruz, and Riverside.

Coffee House moves to temporary locations, construction delayed

Summer school students enjoyed an extra week-and-a-half with their beloved ASUCD Coffee House, as contracting legalities caused a brief delay in construction. The Coffee House began moving to its temporary locations on the east wing of the Memorial Union yesterday; however, construction may not begin for another four to six weeks.

Budget cuts hit Healthy Families program

The number of California’s uninsured children is expected to double in 2009. This year, 1.4 million children currently enrolled in the Healthy Families Program will lose coverage due to recent budget cuts.
