On Oct. 18, UC Davis field hockey hosted the UC Berkeley Golden Bears in their last home game of the season. Although the Aggies held their own in the first half, the Golden Bears dominated the offense in the second half, ultimately beating UC Davis 7-1.

Throughout the season, the Aggies have kept a record of 3-10 as of Oct. 22. The Aggies’ last win was a 1-0 upset over the University of Louisville, who was ranked No. 12 at the time. This was UC Davis’ first ranked win since 2013. Since this historic win, the Aggies have been on a losing streak, which was extended to four games after their loss to UC Berkeley.

UC Davis midfielder Larissa Roldan, a third-year sustainable environmental design major, recorded the first shot of the game in the 6th minute. The ball was saved by the UC Berkeley goalkeeper.

The Aggies generated offensive momentum early, earning three penalty corners in the first quarter. The Golden Bears defended the first two, but midfielder Ella Franken, a fourth-year international relations major, capitalized on the third one and put the Aggies ahead.

Late in the quarter, UC Berkeley earned a penalty corner and got a shot off. The shot was saved by Aggie goalkeeper Addy Collingwood, a second-year business major, giving the Aggies the advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Aggies defended well in the first, conceding only one shot.

In the second quarter, UC Berkeley exploded offensively and began to control the game. In the 17th minute, UC Berkeley equalized with a goal by Liz Klompmaker. Shortly after, UC Davis midfielder Katie Kim, a third-year undeclared major, got a shot off, but it landed just wide of the goal.

In the 27th minute, UC Berkeley’s Holly Pears scored for the Bears putting the Aggies behind for the first time this match going into halftime.

UC Berkeley recorded a total of eight shots in the second quarter, two of which scored, and one of which was saved.

In the third quarter, the Bears scored three more goals on nine shots, putting them up 5-1. In the 32nd minute, UC Davis’ Linnea Liljenstrand-Mjoen, a second-year international relations major, recorded another shot for the Aggies, but failed to place it on target.

In the fourth quarter, UC Berkeley scored another two goals on nine shots ending the game with a score of 7-1. In total, the Aggies were outshot 27-4, including 18-2 shots on goal, showing their struggles on the offensive end. The Aggie defense put up a fight with a total of 10 saves compared to the Bears’ one.

The Aggies will travel to Newark, Delaware for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship from Nov. 6 to 7.
