Best Dispensary: The Artist Tree

The downtown dispensary is a convenient choice for many students

The Artist Tree, located aptly at 420 F St., is this year’s “Best Dispensary,” according to The California Aggie’s Best of Davis survey of UC Davis students. 

The cannabis dispensary, which first opened its doors in 2018, was originally known as F Street Dispensary before being renamed Club 420 and most recently rebranding to The Artist Tree. 

The Artist Tree is a chain of dispensaries in California, with stores in Los Angeles, Riverside, Fresno and West Hollywood, among other cities. 

They describe themselves as a “dispensary that blends premium cannabis with curated local art and creative community spaces.” Locations feature a rotating gallery of local art and often serve as community hubs. 

“By fusing art with cannabis culture, we’re defining a new standard for art, learning, shopping, events and experiences,” their website reads. 

Dispensaries are a cornerstone of Californian culture, as the state has been at the forefront of the movement to legalize cannabis use. While the use of cannabis is criminalized federally in the United States as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act, California became the first state to legalize medical cannabis use in 1996, with recreational use legal since 2016. 

The Davis location of the Artist Tree has several characteristics which makes it appeal to students. As one anonymous student, a third-year managerial economics major, noted, its location is convenient. 

“Since it’s right in downtown, it’s really easy to stop by and grab something without having to go too out of your way,” the student said. 

Another anonymous student, a third-year cognitive science major, added that the store contains a wide variety of products and often features deals. 

“They have tons of different things, pretty much whatever you’re looking for,” the student said. “And they usually have deals going on which definitely makes things more affordable. I feel like that’s perfect for a college town.” 

In addition, the store offers online orders, allowing for quick and easy purchases. 

Students above the age of 21, or over 18 with a valid Medical Marijuana Identification Card, can visit the dispensary at 420 F St. More information is available on their website at theartisttree.com.
