Over the past year, several new businesses have opened in the Davis Collection. As part of development efforts, the shopping center on Russell Boulevard has expanded to include several local and chain businesses such as Nordstrom Rack, Ulta Beauty, Mendocino Farms, Shah’s Halal and more. This spring, new businesses opened to the public in the Davis Collection, including Fluffy Fluffy Dessert Cafe, Good Friends Hawaiian Poke, and most recently, Cold Stone Creamery.

Proposed in 2023, the Davis Collection project aimed to redevelop the parking lot around the existing Trader Joe’s to create over 100,000 square feet of new commercial space. The owner of the shopping mall, Brixmor Property Group, said that the Davis Collection is being reimagined to merge local and chain businesses in a walkable location.

“These upgrades have repositioned The Davis Collection as a modern, walkable destination,” Brixmor said in a statement. “[It] serves as a dynamic gathering place for the Davis community while delivering a compelling merchandising mix tailored to the local market.”

Now, two years after the original proposal, The Davis Collection has grown to include over 15 businesses, featuring restaurants, retail locations and more. Additionally, The Davis Collection now includes a pedestrian plaza, more walkways and additional landscaping to increase walkability.

Isabelle Sabsovich, a second-year managerial economics major, explained the ways in which the new updates to The Davis Collection make it more accessible for students.

“The new design of The Collection has made it way more helpful for students,” Sabsovich said. “Having all of the new businesses so close to campus is great. Especially the mix of restaurants and stores being so nearby is really good for students, especially without having cars on campus.”

As the development of The Davis Collection continues, several new businesses have opened this spring. In February of this year, the Collection welcomed Fluffy Fluffy Dessert Cafe, which has quickly become a brunch and cafe favorite for students. Later that month, the Collection welcomed the second location of a popular local business, Good Friends Hawaiian Poke.

This April, the Davis Collection welcomed its 19th business with the opening of a Cold Stone Creamery, a unique build-your-own ice cream shop where customers can create their own mix of ice cream and toppings. The ice cream shop had a soft opening on April 4, and has become a popular hit with students and Davis residents alike.

Morgan Thompson, a second-year psychology major, explained the perks of having a Cold Stone Creamery open so close to campus.

“I’m really happy about the new Coldstone in Davis because I love grabbing a sweet treat after a long day,” Thompson said. “I especially appreciate the fact that I can create something to fit my exact craving.”

The Davis Collection is still growing. For more information about developments and the project phases of The Collection, visit the City of Davis website.
