UC Davis men’s soccer gets shut out by the University of Washington on the road

Goalkeeper Talin Morgan sets single-game record with 12 saves

The UC Davis men’s soccer team traveled to the University of Washington on Sept. 5, losing 4-0 to the Huskies.

The Aggies started off strong with a shot on goal by Ronaldo Melgoza, a third-year civil engineering major, within the first six minutes of gameplay.

The Huskies scored their first goal 10 minutes into the match. Forward Callum Lugton scored, assisted by defender Asher Hestad and midfielder Cameron Cruz.

Midfielder Osato Enabulele added another goal, with forward Emmett Layman picking up the assist. Midfielder Zach Ramsey capitalized on a penalty kick, giving the Huskies the lead, 3-0, at halftime.

UC Davis picked up a yellow card in the 36th minute of the game during a penalty kick for the University of Washington — The Aggies called in three substitutes within the same minute.

In the 44th minute, Gunner Parker, a first-year wildlife, fish and conservation biology major, took a shot on goal for the Aggies before halftime was called.

Aggie goalkeeper, Talin Morgan, a second-year managerial economics major, made five saves during the first half.

The Aggies started the second half of the match with three more substitutions.

University of Washington’s Ramsey picked up another goal 10 minutes into the second half, with help from midfielder Kevin Hernandez and midfielder Connor Lofy, putting the Huskies up 4-0.

The Aggies recorded two shots in the second half from midfielder Nico Collins, a first-year economics major, and defender Gabe Sanchez, a third-year human development major.

The Aggies took another three substitutions in the 71st minute of the game, two more in the 75th minute, one in the 79th minute and their final one in the 82nd minute.

Throughout the game, the Aggies had four shot attempts and nine fouls in total compared to the Huskies’ 30 shot attempts and seven fouls.

Morgan made an additional seven saves in the second half, stopping two goal attempts before Ramsey scored his second goal and five saves after until the end of the 90 minutes.

With 12 saves against the Huskies, Morgan broke the UC Davis single-game record for saves, surpassing former Aggie soccer player Wallis Lapsley. Lapsley previously broke the record on Sept. 22, 2018 against Saint Mary’s College with nine saves. Morgan stopped 12 out of 16 shots on goal, finishing the game with a 75% save percentage.

Morgan has been the anchor behind the Aggie defense, starting all six games and playing more than 520 minutes this season. He has 23 saves across his collegiate record, allowing only 19 goals on 89 shots faced.

The Aggies will return to the road to take on the St. Mary’s University Rattlers on Sept. 19. in San Antonio, Texas.
