UC Davis field hockey shut out by Yale with a score of 3-0

Aggies put up a strong defense, saving eight shots on goal

The UC Davis field hockey team traveled to play No. 18 Yale University on Sept. 13, falling 3-0 in New Haven, Connecticut.

Both teams’defenses dictated the opening quarter, with UC Davis goalkeeper Addison Collingwood, a second-year business major, making a save on Yale’s Emilia Puddicombe’s shot six minutes into the match. Yale continued to pressure the Aggie defense, but UC Davis held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first 15 minutes.

UC Davis recorded its first shot of the game at 13:28 when second-year undeclared major midfielder and forward Cosi Karleski’s attempt went wide of the cage. The Aggies finished the first quarter with one shot, one save and one penalty corner, while the Bulldogs recorded two shots and 17 fouls.

Yale increased its offensive pressure in the second quarter, recording eight shots compared to one from UC Davis. Forward Tabs Collier had multiple opportunities for the Bulldogs, but Collingwood continued to keep Yale off the scoreboard.

At 17:50, Yale forward and midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco took a penalty corner, but Collingwood made the save. Midfielder Victoria Collee attempted the rebound, but Collingwood blocked her attempt. The Aggie goalkeeper continued to stop shots from forward Gigi Caldero and Collier.

UC Davis’ defense held through the remainder of the half. Midfielder Mia Edwards, a third-year anthropology major, also made a defensive save on a Yale penalty corner, helping the Aggies enter halftime in a scoreless tie. Collingwood made five more saves in the second quarter.

The momentum quickly changed in the third quarter. Collee scored 31 seconds into the second half assisted by midfielder and forward Emma Ramsey. The combined effort gave Yale its first lead of the game.

UC Davis attempted to respond as midfielder Ella Franken, a fourth-year international relations major, generated an opportunity off a penalty corner from midfielder Tristen Stanimir, a first-year human biology major, but Yale’s defense denied the attempt. Collingwood also stopped another shot from Caldero.

Yale extended its lead through back-to-back penalty corner conversions. Issy Baileff scored at 38:41, with assists from Picciafuoco and Ramsey, putting the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.

Just over a minute later, Baileff scored again at 39:59, once again assisted by Picciafuoco and Ramsey. The goal was Baileff's second of the game and fourth of the season, extending Yale’s lead to 3-0.

UC Davis attempted to answer in the final minutes of the third quarter, but the Aggies were unable to convert their opportunities. The Aggies entered the fourth quarter trailing 3-0.

The Aggies continued to push offensively in the fourth quarter, generating five shots and three penalty corners. Edwards and Franken each recorded shots on target, but Yale sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf made the saves to preserve the shutout.

Collingwood made her eighth and final save of the afternoon in the fourth quarter as Yale secured the 3-0 victory.

The loss moved UC Davis to 2-4 overall, while Yale improved to 4-0.

Collingwood played all 60 minutes and matched her career high with eight saves. Edwards and Franken each recorded two shots on target, while third-year Katie Kim led the Aggies with three shot attempts.

The Aggies return to the road to face the University of Louisville Cardinals on Sept. 27.
