Get to know your student government

It’s the beginning of the year, and the Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD), UC Davis’ student government, is gearing up for the upcoming school year. Similar to the United States government, ASUCD is made up of a legislative, judicial and executive branch. Within the legislative branch, there are commissions, groups of students who do specific work for the association. Along with planning events, commissions also see bills that are seen by the senate, and give the senators their opinions on the bills before they are voted on.

This upcoming Saturday, students from around the country will be flooding to the UC Davis campus to participate in a series of events aimed at drawing high school seniors to Davis. Preview Day, an annual event to encourage seniors to apply to UC Davis, involves events such as tours, exposure to current students and professors, lunch at the dining commons, resident hall tours and, most importantly, information about admissions.

On Monday, petitions for the upcoming ASUCD elections were released. Yet yearly averages show that 85 percent of the UC Davis student body was unaware of past election cycles. Like the latent crash of thunder, so low and distant it hardly registers in the human auditory canal, petitions were released, and UC Davis campus politics awoke from its slumber.
