I experienced a moment of surprising self-reflexivity Friday while I was protesting the fee hikes outside of the Segundo dining hall.

Students organized on Thursday against the UC Regents’ decision to increase fees 32 percent. After marching through campus, the demonstrators attempted a sit-in at Mrak Hall.

Amid student protests, the UC Board of Regents concluded its UCLA meeting by voting to increase student fees by 32 percent. They also passed a budget that leads up to 2011.

Torres stressed the importance of the student protests at Mrak Hall and recommended that the senate move there to support the students and stand against the UC Regents’ 32 percent fee increase decision.

I have to admit, my trip down to Berkeley to take part in the protests against the UC Regents’ proposed 32 percent student fee increase was initially more out of curiosity than solidarity. Like most students, I said I was against the fee increases – but I knew next to nothing about the background and complexity of the situation. Mostly, I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And my only class that day had been cancelled.
