U.S. Bank at the Memorial Union still under negotiations

The Memorial Union may be getting a new addition to take over the East Conference Room – a U.S.Bank. Though no contract has yet been reached,the university has been in talks with ASUCD President Ivan Carrillo to try to reach a consensus.Carrillo hosted a townhallstylemeeting on Jan.26to inform students about the situation and hear ideas and concerns.Carrillo said roughly40students attended the meeting.

UC Davis hit a record high for the number of applications from high school seniors and transfer students for fall 2009, with a 5.4 percent increase compared to fall 2008.

Approximately20women gathered Friday afternoon to discuss ways to save the Gender Education program. After the2008-2009school year,the program will be cut if it is not put on the official Women’s Resources and Research Center budget – something that organizers are fighting to make happen.
Activist speaks about Israel-West Bank barrier

Over70students and supporters gathered Tuesday afternoon by the Memorial Union to speak about the wall separating Palestine and Israel. The event was hosted by the Students for Justice in Palestine,with speaker Schachaf Palokow,from Anarchist Against the Wall– a human rights organization dedicated to supporting popular Palestinian resistance to the Israeli separation wall.

King Hall Law School construction put on hold

An empty state piggy bank leaves King Hall School of Law expansion and renovation at a standstill.Due to a tight state budget,the California Pooled Money Investment Board halted payments for state-funded capital projects on Dec.17.On Jan.9the campus suspended theKing Hallproject for90days.Contractor K.O.O.Construction will maintain the area during this period.

ASUCD Senate elections kick off

Barack Obama may already be president,but in less than three weeks,UC Davis students have another important vote to cast. ASUCD elections will take place beginning at8a.m.on Feb.18and19online and at the Memorial Union.Students will vote to replace half of the senate’s twelve members whose terms expire winter quarter,as well as for the ASUCD president and vice president.In addition,students will approve or defeat three ballot measures:The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) and two constitutional amendment measures.
