District Attorney office faces $2 million in proposed cuts

The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office is faced with a proposed budget cut from the County Board of Supervisors of approximately $2 million from a $12 million budget.

Breakaway from Cancer bike ride seizes Russell

Off-campus students leaving their homes next Sunday may run into the fundraising Breakaway from Cancer bike ride that will begin on a temporarily closed-off Russell Boulevard at 7:30 a.m. April 25. Organized by the Amgen-founded Breakaway from Cancer initiative, the ride aims to raise awareness about the resources available to those afflicted with cancer. The Breakaway ride consists of the Stage-2 route of the Amgen Tour of California, a 114-mile cycling trek that begins on Davis’ Russell Boulevard and concludes in Santa Rosa. Anyone who pays the entry fee can participate.

Teachers and students march to save California’s future

Six core marchers organized by the California Federation of Teachers will be completing their trek from Bakersfield to the capitol in an effort to bring attention to California’s education crisis. The march will culminate in Sacramento on April 21.

U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame prepares for grand opening

Davis has been long recognized as a bicycle friendly town, so the opening of an attraction all things bicycle is no surprise. After moving to Davis from Somerville, New Jersey in November 2009, the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame has since merged with the California Bicycle Museum and designed a new logo. On Saturday, Apr. 24 at 11:30 a.m. the museum will officially open its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Prop 17 puts auto insurance discount on June ballot

Proposition 17 – or the continuous coverage discount initiative – is giving California drivers a say on insurance companies’ discount logistics. Under Prop 17, drivers can be awarded a continuous coverage discount, even if they switch insurance providers – as long as they have some form of consistent auto insurance. If there is a lapse in coverage for more than 90 days, the discount will be taken away. Currently, drivers can be awarded continuous coverage discounts, but only within one insurance company. If drivers’ switch providers, they lose their continued coverage discount.

Upcoming election decides development law in Davis

There will be important decisions to make in Davis come June 8 when Davis residents vote on an item on the ballot called Measure R. Measure R extends an already existing law Measure J until 2020. The ordinance has a critical role in determining how private contractors and real estate companies conduct business in Davis. Measure J originally passed in 2000 with a 53.6 percent majority of voters behind it.
