The Davis Farmers Market and the Food Co-op can attribute their success,at least in part,to the efforts of a local couple. UC Davis graduates Annie and Jeff Main were instrumental in the market and the co-op’s establishment through a partnership with three families.They are now the owners of the farm Good Humus.
Purchase saves farmland from commercial use

Solano Land Trust,a Bay Area-based conservation group,purchased their third farmland easement in the Davis-Dixon area,bringing their total controlled area to nearly1,000acres of farmland. The most recent purchase is part of the Dixon Ridge,an area of high quality farmland along the I-80corridor.The Miles/Kidwell easement is nearly488acres in size.
Series of shooting incidents shock Davis residents

Davispolice responded to an emergency request about an eviction enforcement gone wrong on Sept.29.The incident turned out to be the most recent shooting in series of several in Davis since May. A Yolo County Sheriff’s deputy visited a resident on Hanover Drive to enforce the eviction,when during the discussion the resident confronted the deputy with a knife.The deputy responded with her firearm and shot the resident once in the torso,according to the press release.
Target to host grand opening Sunday

Measure K’s vision has finally materialized. As of yesterday, Davis’ new Target store finally opened its doors. Davis’ first big-box store at 4485 Second St. in Mace Ranch will have its grand opening on Sunday. A launch party for special guests was held on Tuesday night and yesterday marked its “soft” opening.
Assembly bill saves statewide healthcare for low income children

Over 600,000 children can count on health insurance coverage. A Sept. 3 vote of 62 to 5 by the California Assembly saved a program that provides health insurance to low income children, including close to 2,000 Yolo County kids. AB 1422, a bill authored by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, helped recover the Healthy Families Program. Enrollment was closed in mid-July. A waiting list of 71,000 children was set up in late August due to the state’s budget crisis and General Fund reductions.

California online job postings drop 5.5 percent

California has reached 12.2 percent unemployment. With the results from a recent monthly study, it seems those numbers won’t drop anytime soon. The Conference Board’s monthly Help-Wanted Online Data Series found that in California, online job listings are down about 5.5 percent. In August, job postings in California had been slightly up, but by September only 366,100 listings were posted compared with 387,300 in August.

More time than ever is directed towards the exploration of social networking and its uses. Online users are spending almost three times the amount of time as the previous year on blogs and social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Myspace, according to a recent report by the Nielsen Company.
