Picnic Day,UC Davis‘ annual open house,will take place this Saturday with the theme “Reflections:100Years of Aggie Legacy,” in honor of the university‘s centennial celebrations. For its organizers,no theme was more appropriate. “The Aggie legacy is Picnic Day,it’s our oldest tradition– it’s remained a constant throughout UC Davis history,” said Steven D.Lee,publicity chair and a senior political science and communication double major.

While a majority of UC Davis students try to deny the existence of cows on campus,an animal science class has gone one step further in the opposite direction–owning their own dairy farm. The class,ANS124,focuses on the process of lactation in all mammals.Taught by Professor Russ Hovey during winter quarter,the class participated in a student-run project–inducing lactation and milk production in dairy cows with hormones to replicate pregnancy.

The warm spring sunshine means ripe citrus trees in Davis and a chance for the UC Davis Students for Sustainable Agriculture (SSA) to continue the fruit harvesting effort they began last year. The project was informally started when Christie McCullen,a community and regional development graduate student,organized a bike trip around Davis to ask different residents for permission to pick ripe fruit from their citrus trees.

With a growing membership and recent big tournament win,the UC Davis Chess Team is on the rise. Last month the club’steam,the UCD Knights,prevailed as champions of the Sacramento Team Chess Championship.The tournament saw many of Northern California’s best teams take each other on in anail-biting competition.Eight teams competed in seven rounds of simultaneous games over a series of weeks.

The International Relations Student Association (IRSA) is the place to be for students looking for a laid back atmosphere to talk about current events, eat food from around the globe and learn about other cultures. The club organizes weekly meetings and events that range from “coffee and newspapers” where members meet at the International House to discuss current events and politics over coffee to international movie nights at an art deco movie theater in Sacramento.
