Technocultural studies offers unique experience for undergrads

A performing arts,cultural studies,and history medley with a twist of technology,technocultural studies offers an innovative major that is unique to UC Davis. Based off a word not found in the English dictionary,technocultural studies is an interdisciplinary major that bridges the arts,humanities,technologyand the sciences in away so that students have hands-on experience with digital production equipment.

Student dances her way to Elite

Plastic flip-flops and suede Ugg boots lay abandoned on the heavily polished floor. The sound of dribbling basketballs faintly echoes in the gymnasiumas students wearing faded sweatshirts of their past ballet recitals watch a girl dance to her own voice reciting lyrics. Her polished fingernails graze the floor, making a soft clicking sound.

Breast cancer survivors counsel current patients

In order to support patients newly-diagnosed with breast cancer,the Safeway Foundation recently gave the UC Davis Cancer Center$128,000to launch the WeCARE Community-Based Breast Cancer Peer Navigator Project. WeCARE will provide the recently diagnosed patients with peer navigators,also called “cancer coaches,” in order to help patients through those first months after their diagnosis.The project creator,UC Davis assistant adjunct professor Dr.Marlene von Friederichs-Fitzwater,was inspired by her own life experiences.

UC grads find success with the development of iPhone application

UC Irvine graduates recently debutedtheir first iPhone application amidst the flurry of new applications this holiday season. After graduating from UC Irvine, several friends started their own cloud telephone company called Callfire and used the technology and infrastructure to create “FriendCast,” the free iPhone application aimed at helping student groups communicate last-minute changes of plans. The application allows the user to record a message and send it to the phones of friends, colleagues or group-mates.

Butterflies wanted

Arthur Shapiro,professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis continues his annual “Butterfly-for-Beer” contest,now in its38thyear,this month. Shapiro will reward whoever captures the first live cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) of the year.Only adult butterflies found outdoors in Sacramento,Solano or Yolo counties are eligible.
