Thanksgiving is a time for friends,family and fat.It doesn’t matter if you’ve yet to succumb to the Freshman15,if you go to the ARC every week or even if you haven’t eaten dessert all year; when you go home on Thursday,odds are you will gain weight.But you already know this.

Known to some as National Turkey Day,Thanksgiving can often be a holiday for the carnivorous kind,with a big ol‘ butterball front and center and a wave oftryptophan-induced sleepiness soon to follow. But for those who’d like to stay awake for the pumpkin pie,a vegetarian Thanksgiving may just be the gelatin-free whipped cream on the soy-based cake this year.

Over 20 years ago, a woman knocked on the door of Davis Fire Station 31 and asked for assistance to make a Thanksgiving dinner for her children. The firefighters pooled funds and bought a turkey for her and began to think about expanding their contribution. The firefighters’ gift of a single turkey has since expanded into the annual Davis Firefighter’s Union Thanksgiving Food Basket Program, which provides 630 full Thanksgiving meal baskets for Davis needy families.

Kingsley Grafft, a UC Davis sorority member, developed a sexual assault prevention and awareness curriculum that’s being taught on campus and emulated at other universities nationwide. The course, Greeks Against Sexual Assault (GASA), aims to eliminate sexual and dating violence by raising awareness and prevention. It is a pass/no pass class offered as a seminar through the UC Davis education department.

TODAY NCAA Tournament ticket distribution 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Freeborn Hall Ticket Office Men’s soccer will host Denver in the first round of the national tournament at Aggie Soccer Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for UC Davis students, faculty and staff, and $7 for adults. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Moh-Moh is nervous. This Saturday is UC Davis’ Little International Stock Show, and Moh-Moh, a heifer, has never been around so many people and animals before. But the student showing her likes his chances. “I think I will win. I really spend a lot of time with her, one on one,” said Michael Chao, an entrant in this year’s beef section.

I was exploring an unknown territory also known as West Davis. I’d heard there was a Chinese restaurant with rather tasty food. Whether it was fact or fiction, I did not know. But on a cold Wednesday night, I decided to venture out and see for myself. In a dark area known as the Westlake Plaza, there’s a restaurant called Shanghai Town. I say it was dark because the plaza had few lights or neon signs indicating that any business (or life) was in existence. I finally found Shanghai Town situated in an obscure location by a taqueria and a drycleaners.
