The young calves, developed by Recombinetics Inc., are part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture collaborative research project. Gene editing was used to remove the horning trait from these calves, addressing an important animal welfare issue in dairy cows, which usually have their horns removed. At UC Davis, the calves will be monitored for general health and well-being, and at 1 year of age will be bred to learn whether the hornless trait is carried on to their offspring.
