UC Davis’ novice eight women’s crew overcame Gonzaga over the final 500 meters to claim first place in the petite final at the Pac-10 Championships at Lake Natoma on Sunday afternoon while the varsity eight took fifth in its petite final. The Aggie novices crossed the finish line of the 2,000-meter course in six minutes, 57.1 seconds, beating Gonzaga by less than a second and third-place Sacramento State by almost two. The Aggies’ varsity eight was timed in its petite final in 6:56.8.

Tired of the University of California failing to “bargain in good faith,” theUniversity Professional and Technical Employees(UPTE) unionheld a one-day strike at the Berkeley campus and University Office of the President on May6. “It was very exciting,the enthusiasm about standing up for their rights and letting the university know that we’re unhappy about not getting raises and that the bargaining hasn’t been going well,” said Colette Williams,a senior research associate at UC Davis who attended the demonstrations.

The Aggies have arrived. A year after itsseventh-place finish atits first Big West Conference Championships,UC Davis took fifth in a very closely contested meet. The Aggies scored94points,leaving them less than10points out of third place.

After last year’s dismal seventh-place finish,the Aggies were ready to show the Big West Conference what they could do. They did. UC Davis finished with136.5points as the runner-up to a dominant squad from Cal State Northridge (176.5) and just ahead of rival Cal Poly (121.5).

Tears,laughterand applause united a crowd of casually and formally dressed Davis residents on Saturday who came to celebrate the life of the late former Davis mayor Julie Partansky.The ceremony,held at the Davis Unitarian Universalist Church,combined music,dance,slide shows and personal remembrance speeches from friends.
