The program is now250members strong,with players‘ skill sets ranging from beginners to former intercollegiate athletes. “We encourage players of all skill levels to join and participate in our club,from the complete beginner to the [United States Tennis Association] veteran,” club president Justin Baker said. The club was recently named the USTA Tennis Club of the Year.The On Campus Club of the Year Award is to honor a club for significant improvements to its program.How it commits its time and resources to benefit the community are also major factors.

UC Davis researchers received a$7million grant for stem cell research onApr.29,allowing labs to conduct groundbreaking research on Huntington’s Disease and in utero treatments for inherited blood cell disorders.The grant is one of fifteen provided by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine tomultiple research centers across California.The overall package totals to just over$67million and is meant to spur development in the relatively new field of embryonic stem cell therapy.

Dada art is difficult to explain, but easier to experience first-hand. More Aggies are becoming addicted to “crack”berries and Mac’s cachet is growing among students,according to a yearly tech survey taken by Computer Lab Management (CLM). In March,CLM sent out two surveys,one focusing on computer printing labs on campus and computer ownership,and the other on the prevalence of smartphones. Forty-three percent of students own smartphones – cell phones that have advanced features like e-mail and internet – the most popular of which are iPhones and BlackBerries.

The California State Senate unanimously approved legislation that would protect integrity of ballots by addressing the use of fraudulent non-English names during elections on May6. Senate Bill288,sponsored by Senator Leland Yee,D-San Francisco/San Mateo,would require candidates who would like an alternative language name on the ballot to be provided a phonetic translation of their name by the county elections office or by the Secretary of State‘s office.

After watching his team struggle to a5-7finish last season and lose a handful of close games,coach Bob Biggs knew he wanted to make changes on defense. Not long into the off-season,he found his man. New defensive coordinator Mark Johnson comes to the Aggies after spending four years in the same position at Utah State.While he has strong ties to UC Davis (Johnson played linebacker for the Aggies from1985-1989,and spent eight years on the UC Davis coaching staff between1990-2004),Biggs said he hired Johnson for the defensive package he employs.
