Centennial Walkway officially opens

Oct. 15, 2008 will forever be marked on UC Davis’ campus as the dedication day for the new Centennial Walkway, the path that runs straight through the Quad.

Unauthorized material during an exam A professor referred a first-year student for academic misconduct in a sociology class.During an exam,the student used a blue book that had previously been filled out with various notes in pencil.As the exam progressed,the student erased the portions of these notes that he no longer needed.A neighboring witness reported this behavior to the professor.The student admitted wrongdoing and agreed to a sanction of deferred separation and15hours of community service.Deferred separation means that the student waives his right to a formal disciplinary hearing if referred to SJA in the future.

After two years of work to establish a new campus e-mail system, UC Davis is officially the first UC campus to switch to Gmail, Google’s email program. Students will keep their existing ucdavis.edu e-mail addresses, but will be able to utilize Gmail features and more than 7GB of storage.

Campus Community Book Project inspires community to go ‘beyond mountains’

The seventh year of the Campus Community Book Project is in full swing with events lined up through December. The project began in2001in response to theSept.11events in an effort to “bring the community together and create a dialogue about complex issues,” saidMikael Villalobos,administrator of diversity education for theOffice of Campus Community Relations. “The book project was a way to bring the community together to discuss a lot of the issues that surround us and controversial issues to have a common experience,” he said.

Seven UC faculty to join Institute of Medicin Scholars from UCLA, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco have been elected to join the prestigious National Academies’ Institute of Medicine. The organization recently added 65 new members, bringing the total number up 1,576 scholars and doctors – over 150 of them affiliated with the University of California.

Undergraduate research center opens

Monday marked the opening of the new Undergraduate Research Center,which aims to promote and organize research opportunities for interested UC Davis undergraduates. The opening ceremony coincided with UC Davis‘ Centennial Celebration and was attended by students,faculty and professors. The goal of the center is to help undergraduates of all disciplines find programs and services relevant to their interests,according to the mission statement.Itsemphasis on firsthand experience as a catalyst for academic growth was a key theme addressed by speakers at the event.

There’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that the number of forcible and non-forcible sex offenses, robbery, burglary and arson has reportedly increased, according to UC Davis Clery Act statistics. The good news is that aggravated assaults and motor vehicle theft have reportedly decreased.

Most everyone loves cake,but Wayne Thiebaud made a career out of painting them. The world-renowned painter and professor emeritus of art at UC Davis recently donated an estimated$860,000worth of his prints to the art department.
