Bikers may be fined for cell phone use

The California State Senate passed a bill that increases the fines for drivers and motorists using handheld cell phones or texting while driving. Senate Bill 28, passed on Aug. 15, was proposed by Sen. Joe Simitian (D- Palo Alto) and would add a point against a person’s driver’s license for subsequent offenses.

Two of Rep. Mariko Yamada’s bills approved this summer

Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed into law two of Rep. Mariko Yamada’s (D-Davis) bills. Assembly Bill 966 was approved on July 25 by the governor and extends burials to non-residents of the Davis Cemetery District, which encompasses mainly just Davis. On Aug. 8, he also signed AB 413, which will allow for a pilot project for all-ballot elections in Yolo County to analyze the effects of all-mail ballot voting on local elections.

Federal loans not immediately impacted by U.S. credit rating

Domes could reopen as soon as Fall Quarter

Though the future of the UC Davis Domes cooperative housing remains uncertain after its closure last week, the Solar Community Housing Association (SCHA) has begun negotiations to lease the property and reopen the co-ops.

UC, CSU to lend money to the state

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill on Aug. 1 that requires University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), California Community Colleges (CCC), the Judicial Council, as well as other agencies, to invest at least $500 million into the state, with the investments exceeding no more than $10 billion. Senate Bill 79 was introduced in early January in response to the state’s economic crisis.
