Guest opinion: Thank you for being rich!
OpinionApril 28, 2011
I am writing regarding Rob Olson’s column, “I love the Rich.” Robbie (Can I call you Robbie?) can only find “vague references from righteous protesters and editorial boards” in regards to the theory of trickle-down economics?
Column: Forever 21 done right
OpinionApril 27, 2011
Since its University Mall debut at the beginning of the month, Forever 21 has quickly become a Davis hot spot: Many have walked through its huge shiny doors in hopes of finding stylish new additions to their wardrobe. Three years ago – when a less fabulous first-year Mario lived in Cuarto and bought stuff from the old Gottschalks – a tapioca milk tea from The Old Teahouse was the hottest accessory a U-Mall patron could sport. Now, Forever 21’s infamous yellow plastic bags are all the rage and hang from the wrist of every satisfied customer.
Column: Interviewing secrets
OpinionApril 27, 2011
It’s the season for summer internships/post-grad job applications, and that means upcoming interviews. Interviewing used to terrify me – I’m not the best public speaker in the world. But after prepping many others for interviews and being the interviewer as well as the interviewee, I figured out how to handle any curveball from a potential employer.
Editorial: Online courses
OpinionApril 26, 2011
A $748,000 grant given to the University of California will allow campuses systemwide to start offering online classes. UC Davis is expected to offer as many as six of these courses beginning winter 2012.
Editorial: Cigarette tax
OpinionApril 26, 2011
California voters may soon be faced with the option to increase the tax on cigarettes from 87 cents a pack to $1.87.
Guest Opinion: To live in peace, part II
OpinionApril 26, 2011
Geoffrey Wildanger was 100 percent right in his assertion that the job of an ambassador is to represent the views of their government and improve their country’s relations. So I can see why he did not want to engage with Akiva Tor about Israel.
Column: I love the rich
OpinionApril 26, 2011
At the end of last year, a fierce debate sprang up in Congress over taxes.
Column: Treasure trove of trash
OpinionApril 26, 2011
One of my top three favorite holidays took place last Friday: happy belated Earth Day! (Although, let’s get real. Every day should be Earth Day.) Ideally, you celebrated by having a dance party with solar-generated light and buying only locally-grown, organic food that needs no packaging.
Column: Muttness
OpinionApril 26, 2011
This past Sunday while many people drove home to their families to celebrate Easter, others stayed in Davis and used the quieter atmosphere as an excuse to catch up on neglected homework. And then there were a few who, like me, celebrated an Easter of the Greek sort.
Column: Tee talk
OpinionApril 25, 2011
I think the writing on a person’s t-shirt can tell you a lot about the wearer. And these days, you can get just about anything screen-printed across your chest. It seems like everyone wants to stamp themselves with their own personal mottos, their inspirational battle-cries, their own raisons d’être, if you will. Want to tell the world that Volleyball is 95% mental and 5% physical? I’m sure they would love to know, so put it in writing across your body. Or how about the ever-cryptic “I Don’t Do Drama,” just so everyone is clear. Solid colors have been passé for years, making room for thousands of slogans from the clever to the nasty to the Star Wars-themed. In this week’s column, I’ll be chronicling my favorites.
Guest opinion: Response
OpinionApril 21, 2011
I’m responding to Ms. Miller’s guest opinion not as a member of a “choreographed” group of students, but rather as an individual participant in Israeli Consul General Akiva Tor’s lecture.
Editorial: The Domes
OpinionApril 21, 2011
The saga of the Domes closure continued with a positive step toward compromise when Domes advocates submitted a new proposal to UC Davis administration April 13.
