CD review: Burlesque

Artist: Various Artists

Album: Burlesque Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Label: RCA Records

Rating: 3

For a film whose cast includes legends such as Christina Aguilera and Cher, this soundtrack is, to be polite, underwhelming.

Not only does Cher sound like a robot (sorry, Cher fans!), but Aguilera, who co-wrote several of the songs, loses her charm after the first song. Yes, she does her usual trilling, belting and ooh la la’s that we all have come to love and identify her with, but the majority of the songs have one essential element lacking: a melody. A musical soundtrack really does require a melody in order to feel like a musical. Otherwise it falls short of expectations, does nothing for the plot of the movie and loses the attention of the listener, which is exactly what happened here.

There is one redeeming exception. Christina’s solo, “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” really shows her range as an artist in a light she generally does not allow herself to shine in.

Give these tracks a listen: “Express,” “Burlesque”

For fans of: Christina Aguilera, Cher, Moulin Rouge
