Aggie Digest

The Aggies played their first dual match of the 2011 season on Saturday to a disappointing result.

UC Davis fell 7-0 to Santa Clara at Degheri Tennis Center in Santa Clara. The Broncos move to 2-0 on the season while the Aggies fall to 0-1.

The UC Davis doubles team of Toki Sherbakov and Nick Lopez took the Santa Clara doubles team of Kyle Dandan and Nicholas Vinel to a tiebreaker before ultimately falling 7-6 (7-4), 8-4 and 8-2.

The Broncos dominated the action in the singles matches, winning all but one match in two sets.

UC Davis will play its home openers next weekend by hosting Pacific on Friday and rival Sacramento State on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis

UC Davis went 1-1 in back-to-back meets this weekend, beating Iowa State 4-3 and losing to host Arizona State 7-0. Both dual matches took place at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.

Three freshmen, including Kelly Chui, Nicole Koehly and Megan Heneghan, all picked up key victories for the Aggies. Chui came from behind to win the clinching match, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The Aggies struggled against the host Sun Devils in Sunday’s dual match.

Sophomore Lauren Curry was the only UC Davis player to force a third set against Arizona State before ultimately falling 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.

The Aggies are now 1-1 on the young season. UC Davis will return to action next week when they travel to play Stanford on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
