CD review: The Pretty Reckless

Artist: The Pretty Reckless

Album: Light Me Up

Label: Interscope Records

Rating: 3

Even though girl bands that aim for that punk/rock sound carry around a pretty nasty stereotype, this one at least shakes it off completely. The fresh sound of “Gossip Girl” star Taylor Momsen, who writes and sings the tracks, offers something new and exciting to the world of girl punk.

For someone who paraded around in Chanel couture for the last three years in New York City, this band’s lead songwriter/singer knows how to do badass. The tracks are edgy, daring and definitely not for the fainthearted. Not only does she dig into the nitty gritty of teenage relationships, but the album does not show any sign of self-consciousness. For the age of most of its members, or at least its star, this band is not afraid to go for it in every aspect of their music, whether that be lyrics, guitar solos or tempo.

Give these tracks a listen: “Just Tonight,” “Make Me Wanna Die”

For Fans of: Paramore, My Chemical Romance
