Biking toward my house one evening, I snapped this photo on the corner of H and Eighth Street. I used a slow shutter (1/15 second) to capture the motion of the train, a wide aperture (f/1.8) and a high ISO (1600) to expose for the last orange licks of the sunset.
I was hoping to convey the strobe effect that the passing train creates as the car-lights flash between each boxcar. I found this composition worked well because the glowing lights seem to call the still bikers toward their destination, with the fast-moving train intervening. What other slices of Davis life do we usually fail notice? Let me know at jtraff@ucdavis.edu.
