CD review: Corinne Bailey Rae

Artist: Corinne Bailey Rae

Album: The Love EP

Label: Capitol

Rating: 4

Love, what is it good for? Absolutely everything – especially if it’s Corinne Bailey Rae singing about it. The Love EP is Corinne Bailey Rae’s homage to some of her favorite artists. It consists of five covers in which Bailey Rae manages to take each song and make it into her own sound. The EP opens with a cover of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and Bailey Rae does it great justice. It’s more electro funk than the original version, but just as sexy and tempting.

Of the five covers that Bailey Rae does, one standout is “Is This Love;” the original song by Paul McCartney and Wings. Bailey Rae sings the song slowly, savoring each word and making it jazzier. After listening to the EP, listeners might wear out the replay button. The only thing stopping this EP from being perfect is that it only contains five songs. Overall, the EP will tide Corinne Bailey Rae fans until her next album drops.

Give these tracks a listen: “Is This Love,” “I Wanna Be Your Lover”

For fans of: Adele, Norah Jones, Lykke Li
