CD review: Salt N Pepa

Artist: Salt N Pepa

Album: Icon – Salt N Pepa

Label: Island

Rating: 5

Salt N Pepa, one of the most legendary female rap groups of the ’90s hip-hop era, makes a comeback with an album of their greatest hits, reminding the new and unaware generation to “get up on this.”

While considered the First Ladies of Hip Hop, this trio of lady lyricists rap about everything from dancing and having a good time to asserting their status as female MCs to their definition of real men to aspects of sex, both educational and recreational, and beyond. It’s a great album to have if you’re in the mood to dance to the beat. All 12 songs range from slow to fast and bring back all the great flavor of original ’90s music with a hint of modernity.

Give these tracks a listen: “Get Up Everybody (Get Up),” “Push It,” “Shoop,” “Whatta Man”

For fans of: Digital Underground, Eric B. & Rakim, Slick Rick, Heavy D. & The Boyz
