Student regent missing at meeting

A group calling itself “Justice for Laya” protested outside Wednesday’s regents meeting, calling for Student Regent Jesse Cheng’s resignation. Cheng did not attend the meeting.

Cheng was arrested, but not charged, for sexual battery in October. Two weeks ago, UC Irvine’s Office of Student Conduct concluded that Cheng touched a woman without her consent. Cheng has denied these charges.

Protesters said they want the regents to conduct a separate investigation. Regent Chairman Russell Gould said the regents would wait until the campus review of the situation has finished before considering action.

Student Regent-designate Alfredo Mireles replaced Cheng for the meeting.
