Track Preview

Event: Asics Steve Scott Invitational

Where: Anteater Stadium – Irvine, Calif.

When: All Day

Who to watch: Senior Thomas Philips has been an asset to the Aggies for his whole college career.

The San Jose, Calif. native has had great success in the 400 hurdles, sitting at No. 1 on the UC Davis all-time list.

Philips is pushed by fellow senior Alex Wilright. The Philips-Wilright duo has combined to win the 400 hurdles for the past five years at the Cal-Nevada Championships, and they continue to be strong force for the Aggies this year.

Did you know? The Asics Steve Scott Invitational is named after three-time Olympian Steve Scott.

Scott ran for UC Irvine as an undergraduate career, where he was named All-American six times.

Preview: With only a few weeks before the NCAA Preliminary Regional Championships, the track team is ready to keep breaking records.

Last weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at California, the team broke several school records and numerous runners and fielders made personal bests.

In that meet, senior Jonathan Sees and freshman Alycia Cridebring were honored on Wednesday as Big West Track Athletes of the Week.

While Sees won the award for his mile time, Cridebring garnered the women’s accolades with her seventh-place finish in the 1500. Cridebring is ranked in the top-five in that event for the Big West Conference.

With individual records continuously set and broken, the team has made coach Byron Talley very proud.

“All across the board, the team did a fantastic job [last weekend],” Talley said. “It’s the kind of board you want to see a few weeks before NCAA Preliminaries.”

This weekend, the team is looking forward to the competition down in Irvine. The squad will face new competition that will help it prepare for the upcoming NCAA event.
