UC Davis Med School’s conflict of interest policies among best

The UC Davis School of Medicine, an institution renowned for its education and research, can now add a different kind of recognition to its long list of achievements.

The American Medical Student Association recently conducted a ranking of medical schools based on their policies regarding free gifts from pharmaceutical companies.

UC Davis receives $2.67 million grant for pediatric emergency care

Emergency Medical Services for Children awarded the UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine a $2.67 million grant to fund three more years of participation in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network. PECARN, the first federally funded pediatric emergency medicine research network in the country, serves more than 900,000 acutely ill and injured children every year and conducts large-scale research projects.

New competition promotes energy efficiency

UC Davis energy experts at the Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) announced the launch of the Western Cooling Challenge for design at the Retailer Energy Alliance Supplier Summit in Denver on June 5.

Wildfires blanket Davis in smoke

While an estimated 800 wildfires blaze throughout California, Davis is seeing the effects in the thick layer of smoke that has descended on the town and campus this week.

A fire burning on the border of Napa and Solano counties in particular is contributing the majority of the smoke that has settled in and around Davis.

UC Santa Barbara student nominated as 2009-2010 UC Student Regent

At the University of California's Board of Regents July 16 to 17 meeting, UC Santa Barbara graduate student Jesse M. Bernal will be selected as the 35th UC student regent since the position was inaugurated in 1975.

The student regent is a voting member of the UC Board of Regents who attends all board and committee meetings.

Heather Young appointed as associate vice chancellor for School of Nursing

The University of California Board of Regents approved Heather Young as associate vice chancellor for the new Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing earlier this month.

Young currently is the Grace Phelps Distinguished Professor, director of Rural Health Research Development and director of the John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at the Oregon Health and Science University School of Nursing. She is also a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

Schwarzenegger, President of Chile sign agriculture partnership at UC Davis

As UC Davis students took their last finals June 12, the campus buzzed with excitement at the arrival of Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a signing ceremony of agricultural cooperation agreements between Chile and UC Davis.

Speaker for Davis graduation ceremony refuses to cross picket line

Former California State Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez was a no-show at the June 11 School of Education commencement ceremony.

Núñez canceled his appearance with a day's notice due to ongoing labor disputes between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees who are trying to negotiate a contract agreement for patient care technical workers and other service employees.

Annual spring De-Stress Night to be held tonight

Campus Unions will host its annual spring De-Stress Night from 5 to 7 p.m. in Griffin lounge tonight. The free event will feature cap decorating and a watermelon eating contest.

Alcohol violation

A first-year student was referred to Student Judicial Affairs after alcohol was found in his suite. The student's friends came over and brought some beer with them.

Correction

In the May 27 issue of The California Aggie, the article "University bans Epic Quad Battle" stated that there was a lawsuit filed against the university. This is incorrect; the injured student has not filed a lawsuit.

Bike desk empowers UC Davis to conserve energy

A bike in the Memorial Union is not an unusual sight at UC Davis. However, a bike students can plug their laptops into has turned a few heads.

The pedal-powered laptop desk was created by an action resource team of graduate students in the Education for Sustainable Living Program. The program is part of a course offered every spring by the California Student Sustainability Coalition.

University of California Center Sacramento receives permanent status

The University of California Center in Sacramento is here to stay.

In a May 6 reception held at the center, UCCS staff as well as alumni, students and various state dignitaries gathered to commemorate the program's achievement and proclaim it a permanent asset to the University of California.
