Best place to meet a mate

0

1. In class

2. Parties

3. The ASUCD Coffee House

Do you have an account at eHarmony? How about Match.com? Well instead of wasting money on these dating sites, you would probably have more luck going to something you pay for to begin with: Class.

Alissa Gossett and Greg Osipoff are currently dating and unlike a common misconception, they did not meet at a party. They met in class. Not only is it convenient since you attend college for the primary reason of going to class (as strange a concept as that is) but according to Gossett, it lets people be themselves.

“In class you arent really looking just to hookup for a night, Gossett said. “Because you arent, you can just be yourself whereas at a party youre in a costume, youre drinking, or theres loud music – none of which are really conducive to making a genuine connection with someone.

Osipoff also explained that since you are in the same class, there is a greater chance of having similarities.

“You usually take classes based on a topic that interests you, Osipoff said. “Its really easy to get a conversation going since it is likely that the person sitting next to you has the same major.

Although you do not spend nearly as much time at parties as you do in class (hopefully), parties were voted as the second best place to find a mate. With all the people that attend parties, it is only natural that one person could be right for you.

The Coho takes the bronze for the best place for picking up your next interest. Always packed with people at most hours of the day, it is only a matter of a little game of “eenie, meenie, miney, moe before you have your next date with that special someone.

So remember, even if you do not go to class for the lecture, you should at least go for all the ladies and gents out there because who knows, maybe they will be your next potential mate.

This year’s winner for best venue is the homey downtown café Delta of Venus, located at 122 B St. DOV often hosts smaller, more intimate shows that include a range of different music styles.

Signy Toquinto, a DOV employee, said the venue’s small size is an advantage.

In second place is the larger on-campus Freeborn Hall. Nutrition 10

Human Sexuality

Introduction to Brewing and Beer

Over 45,000 students have taken Elizabeth Applegate’s Nutrition 10 class in the past 24 years, according to university estimates. It comes as no surprise, then, that the perennial favorite has once again won Best GE Course.

Other annual Best of Davis favorites, HDE 12, Human Sexuality, and FST 3, Introduction to Brewing and Beer, finished second and third, respectively.

The introductory nutrition class covers a variety of topics in nutrition, such as obesity and dietary supplements. Over the years, Applegate has modified the class in response to class evaluations. Recently, she has added optional evening lectures on food safety and grocery shopping. Extra creditJeopardysessions are also a new addition to the class, she said.

Applegate also integrates current topics, events, and research in nutrition in the class; Jessica Simpson was a recent target. (It turns out that her weight gain is not unhealthy, Applegate said.)

Regardless of whether you’re a biochemistry or art studio major, the class offers practical knowledge, Applegate said.

“My feeling is no matter what your background, it helps bring things together you learn about different cycles, she said.In Nutrition 10, we see it all put together.

The class is also infamous for the diet project, in which students keep track of what they eat for three days. Applegate purchases and distributes prizes on the day the project is turned in.

Every Nutrition 10 lecture is podcast and posted online at teaching.ucdavis.edu/nut10/index.htm, so students who are unsure if they want to take the class can take a look.

Though getting into Nutrition 10 can be difficult, as the class always has a waitlist, students need not worry: Applegate said she plans to continue teaching the class untilthey roll me out.

Picnic Day

Whole Earth Festival

Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom

After almost a century of Picnic Days, past and present Aggies alike keep coming back for more.

Over the years, Picnic Day has provided parades, magic shows, Aggie expositions and, more recently, Doxy Derbies.

Picnic Day, occurring on April 18 this year, allows both students and alumni to show off their campus to families and friends. Picnickers can eat deep-fried Twinkies while watching the Battle of the University Bands down by the arboretum, or they can get their face painted after making tie-dyed shirts.

As UC Davis is celebrating its centennial this year, the theme for Picnic Day isReflections: 100 Years of Aggie Legacy. In order to represent the UC Davis student body, all of the Parade Marshals of this year’s parade will be Aggie students, both alumni and current.

“As the UC Davispremier event, Picnic Day is a prominent reflection of the university’s founding, history, growth, achievements and future. Picnic Day 2009 will represent a 100-year legacy of excellence in teaching, research, service and campus life, said Christine Pham, 2009 Picnic Day chair.

Pham said Picnic Day is UC Davis oldest tradition and is the largest student-run event in the nation. Picnic Day is a testament as towhat it means to be an Aggie. Every Aggie will always have a place in their heart for Picnic Day,Pham said.

Coming in second is the Whole Earth Festival, a three day-long spring event that brings art, music and environmental education to the forefront. Whole Earth is always on Mother’s Day weekend, taking place May 8, 9 and 10 this year.

Third-place winner is KDVS-presented music festival Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom, (O: RMF) a student-run event that showcases local underground artists. The next event, O: RMF VII will be May 16.

Best Drink Special

Wicky Wacky Woo at Café Bernardo,

234 D St.

G Street Pub,

228 G St.

Bistro 33,

226 F St.

Café Bernardo may look like the typical Davis restaurant from the outside, but one step into the little bar, otherwise known as Bar Bernardo, and it is Wicky territory.

The famous Wicky Wacky Woo has been a local favorite about 10 years the most popular drink amongst Davis students looking for a good time at Café Bernardo.

“People always come in here and say,Do you guys have the Wicky? We want the Wicky!’ and then they just watch us pour it and fill it up with alcohol to the top of the cup and freak out, said Amber Padilla, the manager of Café Bernardo.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are especially crowded with Wicky requests, but Padilla estimates almost every night has roughly 100 to 150 students cycling in and out with 95 percent of them asking for Wickys.

“That’s mostly what we sell in the bar,she said. They come here for the Wickys.

So what exactly is it about the Wicky that makes it so appealing, especially to college students?

To put it simply, a lot of bang for the buck.

“There’s a lot of alcohol in it,Padilla said.I think it’s a really good deal for how much alcohol you get.

The drink is mixed with seven different types of alcohol, including vodka, gin, rum, amaretto, tequila, Bacardi and then with three different juices to sweeten it all up. It’s so strong, in fact, that the bar limits the number of Wickys someone can order in a nighttwo, to be exact.

The Wickys are $8 regularly, but only $7 during the Hours-in-Between, Café Bernardo’s happy hours from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, the Wicky is a dollar off the regular price. For birthdays, the alcoholic tastiness of the Wicky is free.

“If you want to have a good time, come to Bar Bernardo and have a Wicky,Padilla said.

Coming in second place is the G Street Pub. Claiming to be the number one seller of Jägermeister in Northern California, the pub offers $3 Jägermeister shots andJager bombsfrom 8 to 9 p.m. On Wednesdays, they offer $2 well drinks and pints of Pabst Blue Ribbon for $1.

Bistro 33 also offers a variety of popular deals and delicious drinks to students looking for a happy time. One highlight is Thursday’s $12 Mojito Pitcher night. Each Mojito Pitcher contains about 5 drinks and is filled with fresh mint picked that day.
