Column: Rise of the Girly Men

The California Aggie has formally retracted Tiffany Lew’s Jan. 22 column, “The Rise of the Girly Men.” No further action will be taken against Lew. The views in this opinion column do not represent the views of the California Aggie or its staff.

  1. BeingPCisOverrated “sorry have a life doing things actually important for the world”

yea, looks like you’ve been on this for the past 11 hours, homie.

  2. One other thing: I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if that opinion is not what we would consider socially acceptable. However, I think people who have a soapbox as powerful as The Aggie have an obligation to consider whether what they write is contributing to oppression, and if it does, either find another way to state your opinion or just don’t say it at all.

  3. After attending the Beyond the Binary discussion focused on this article, I just want to comment on Justin’s comments. The reason why this column was bad was not because it offended people. There’s a lot of stuff in the Aggie that “offends” people — that doesn’t mean it doesn’t belong there. The problem with this column was that it perpetuated the oppression that many groups of people face on a daily basis. I don’t think that was the author’s original intent, but nonetheless that’s what the column did, and that’s why The Aggie was right to retract it.

  4. I think that this piece shows a complete ignorance and disregard for the queer community. If we wanted opinions of “girly men” we’d ask the Governor, THANKS. Doesn’t our community get enough of this? What queer member of the university wants to open up their newspaper and read an article that bashes our peers? To me, this is more a rant of a disillusioned and oblivious girl, than anything else. At UC Davis, I would expect some sort of intellectual integrity from the newspaper writers that represent it. I am glad that this article was pulled. I do hope that Miss Lew will learn from the outcry over what she has written. Maybe this reaction will cause a change in her attitude towards the community and she will attempt to gain understanding from the land of girly men, 1920s lesbian feminist (really?), and transgendered folk.

  5. It’s not that I’m a coward, it’s that I know from the past there is no point. I will be dismissed as having an opinion that doesn’t matter because I’m not visually a clear member of any minority (which is not true and then I spend the night having to defend myself)

The only thing more cowardly than a conformist, is a fashionable non-conformist.

  6. Then you’re a coward for not standing up for your opinion in person. It’s not going to be a witch hunt, but you have to understand that regardless of how or who the article was directed towards, it still made many people upset. I’m sorry if this comment came off as rude or harsh…thats not what I intended and if I did I am sorry.

  7. If you truly cared about the issue, and the people who are offended, you’d be at this town hall meeting right now as I am.

  8. I can’t make it because I won’t be a part of a public witch hunt. I’ve been to these “meetings” before and in the past it always turns into a bunch of people yelling and screaming out racism and ignorance where there is none. No thank you.

  9. BeingPCisOverrated, follow through with what you said and go use your science degree instead of arguing about an issue that you seemingly really don’t care about and is apparently a waste of your time. 😉

Everyone has their opinion on whats considered important. Since you seemingly can’t make it to the meeting tonight because it’s not an important issue by your standards, you should keep your mouth shut.
