Men’s golf preview

Event: USC Collegiate Invitational

Times: Today and tomorrow, all day

Who to Watch: Freshman Daniel Covrig has been a solid contributor for the Aggies this season.

The Modesto, Calif. native won the William Jessup Spring Classic, the first tournament victory of his career. He carded a 7-over 220 for the match.

Did You Know? UCLA, the No. 1 team in the nation, will be at the USC Collegiate Invitational this week.

Preview: The Aggies are hoping to play spoiler this week at the USC Collegiate Invitational, one of the more competitive meets of the season.

The UC Davis men’s golf team will be going up against the big dogs of college golf once again at the par-71, 6,869-yard North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Included in the field is No. 1 UCLA, No. 15 San Diego State and No. 17 Stanford.

Head coach Cy Williams is excited for this opportunity to compete among the best.

“Our third strong nationally ranked field awaits us, and we will rise to the challenge,” Williams said.

Each opponent is ranked in the top 50 nationally. As a result, bragging rights and a great opportunity to rise in the rankings present themselves this weekend. The Aggies are ranked 52nd in the nation, so a victory over any team will likely put them in the top 50.

UC Davis looks to rebound from a 10th place finish at the Battle at the Beach, hosted by UCLA and Long Beach State two weeks ago.

Tyler Raber was the Aggies’ top finisher, tying for 23rd at six over after posting the team’s lowest scores after the first and second rounds, including a season-low, first-round score of 68. Austin Graham, Andrew Haggen, Josh Granger and Covrig will join Raber in the Aggies’ probable lineup.

Graham is averaging 72 strokes and is looking to repeat his performance at the 2010 edition of the tournament when he finished tied for eighth place overall. Graham finished with a three-round total of 3-under 210, which was sparked by a 3-under 68 final round score.
