The movie about how a socially awkward Harvard sophomore created the website that changed the world was robbed of a Best Picture win at this year’s Oscars, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fabulous. Great performances, a thumping electronic score and Aaron Sorkin’s rapid-fire dialogue make The Social Network one of the most exciting and thought-provoking films of the year. The Student Alumni Association is hosting the screening and will provide snacks and drinks.

The Davis Shakespeare Ensemble presents an original piece directed by senior English major Gia Battista. The show explores many of Shakespeare’s sonnets, combining current students, alumni, performance art, music and more.

As part of the Capital Public Radio Jackson Hall Jazz series, Friday’s event will feature a double bill of two of the most invigorating groups in jazz, the quartet and quintet of Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard. Blanchard has composed music for two Spike Lee films and Marsalis leads one of the most renowned jazz quartets in the world.

The acclaimed classical quartet will be joined by 22-year-old piano prodigy “Nobu,” who is, if you can believe it, blind since birth. The program will feature works by Bartok, Haydn and Schumann.

The Alvin Ailey Dance Company blends modern dance with African culture to create an experience that is completely unique. The company will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Revelations, a piece that uses traditional spirituals to pay homage to African American culture.

“Least Favorite: Josh Greene” Opening Reception

Nelson Gallery (formerly University Club), Old Davis Rd.
Josh Greene is a San Francisco-based art humorist. His exhibit at the Nelson Gallery features text-based works in which his family offers critiques of his work. It’s sure to be a funny and enlightening exhibit.
