UC Davis faced its first two non-conference opponents of the season last week at Aggie Stadium. Both times, its East Coast foes came away with wins.
The Aggies fell to Vermont 20-12 before losing 13-8 to Robert Morris. UC Davis forged comebacks in both games, but didn't have enough to battle back for the win in either matchup.
Four field eventers won a total of five events for UC Davis as the Aggies put forth a solid showing at their home debut, the Aggie Open, on Saturday.
"Overall for the day, I think we got done what we wanted to get done," said coach Deanne Vochatzer. "We had some highlights in the field events, specifically the lady triple jumpers. To have two women over 39" again and our little freshman heptathlete jump 37'8 was exciting."
No. 8 over No. 5 brought great and not so great news to the world of UC Davis basketball in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center on Wednesday.
A pair of Mark Payne free throws and stingy defense when No. 8 UC Davis needed it most helped the men's basketball team complete a 69-68 come-from-behind win over favored No. 5 UC Irvine.
Former UC Davis distance runners Justin Hurd and Mark Lonac each took home individual championships at the second annual XTERRA Winter World Championships this weekend. Both live in Fort Collins, Colo. and were members of the cross country and track and field teams while at UC Davis.

A homegrown product, Davis native Dakotah Mohr has taken her game to the next level this season. With that, she's unexpectedly taken her young No. 11 UC Davis women's water polo team into the national spotlight.

Who to watch: Mid-distance sensation Jonathan Sees opened his junior season in impressive fashion, clocking 1:51.91 for the 800m at last week's meet in Berkeley. That time placed him ninth on the Aggies' all-time list.
