Students consider volunteering abroad with Peace Corps

There are currently 53 UC Davis alumni serving in the Peace Corps, making the university 14th in the nation for Peace Corps participation. The number has increased since last year, when UC Davis was ranked 21.

Last Thursday, approximately 40 students attended an informational meeting to learn how to continue UC Davis' commitment to service.

Student regent visits UC Davis, discusses priorities and concerns

The UC student regent and student regent-designate stopped at UC Davis on Friday during their statewide barnstorming tour.

D'Artagnan Scorza, the student regent and an education graduate student at UCLA, visited UC campuses last week to discuss policy issues and recruit applicants for the 2010-2011 Student Regent position. Jesse Bernal, the student regent-designate and an education graduate student at UC Santa Barbara, accompanied Scorza.

Possible U.S. Bank branch addition angers some

A possible partnership between UC Davis and U.S. Bank to add a branch to the Memorial Union is inciting protest among some students. The branch would be placed at the East Conference Room in the MU and is intended bring revenue to the university. A 10-year contract with a $3,000 signing bonus would net $140,000 per year for UC Davis, said ASUCD President Ivan Carrillo at the senate meeting on Jan. 15.

Correction

In the Jan. 22 issue of The California Aggie, the article "ACT receives criticism for video interviews" incorrectly stated that ACT's designation as a slate entitles them to on-campus meeting space and SPAC funds, when in fact being a slate is not a SPAC designation and does not entitle them to SPAC funds. The Aggie regrets the error.

UC Davis e-mails targeted by online ‘phishing’

It is a prevalent online threat attacking UC Davis e-mails - and many students and faculty members may not even know if they have become victims. E-mail phishing, or simply "phishing" as it is more commonly known, is a form of online fraud in which the perpetrator attempts to gather personal information from unsuspecting individuals by sending out e-mails or spam that appear to come from reputable organizations, said Mark Stinson, client services manager in the IET department.

TitleStudents protest cutting Gender Education program

Cuts to the Women's Resources and Research Center budget resulting in the elimination of the Gender Education program next year is spurring outrage among students.

The Gender Education (GE) program began after a Department of Justice grant in 1999 and has since been maintained by funds from various organizations, but was never officially added to the WRRC budget.

ACT receives criticism for video interviews

The next generation in ASUCD political organization got off to a somewhat rocky start this week.

The newly formed group, ACT, was prompted to take its first video off its website when organizers learned some of the interviewees may not have been properly informed about the purpose of the video. Students in the video are seen in the ASUCD Coffee House and Memorial Union holding a sign reading "ACT" and answering questions about student involvement in ASUCD.

Chevron donates $2.5 million to Energy Efficiency Center

Chevron Corporation gave the UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center a $2.5 million boost to create a new leadership position called the Chevron Chair in Energy Efficiency.

The EEC relies completely on grants and donations from supporters. The center collaborates with researchers and inventors to encourage commercialization of new or existing energy efficiency solutions.

Students celebrate

President Barack Obama's inauguration sparked a lively celebration on Tuesday night, as over 400 students crowded around campfires and live bands at the Domes. Guests danced inside music-filled domes, atop a bouncing charter bus and listened in silenced respect as President Obama's historical speech was replayed over loudspeakers, commemorating what event organizers deemed as "A New Birth of Freedom" in 2009.

Not In Violatio

A student was referred for copying during an exam. The student correctly answered multiple-choice questions on recordings played before the student arrived at the exam. The SJA officer determined that there was not enough evidence to find the student in violation, but due to concerns about the incident, the student received an Administrative Notice regarding UC Davis policies on copying exams. An administrative notice is not a disciplinary sanction, but a formal notice of university policy.

Construction under way on Hyatt Place, UC Davis

UC Davis and partners recently broke ground on a $13 million project to construct a Hyatt Place just off Interstate-80, neighboring the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on the UC Davis campus.

The 75-room, 49,000 square foot hotel is expected to be finished by 2010.

More than 40 apartment complexes will be present in Freeborn Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today with information regarding off-campus housing.

‘Recyclemania’ comes to Davis

Recyclemania, a nationwide competition among 100 universities, kicked off on Sunday, running until Mar. 27.

During the competition universities strive to collect as much recyclables as they can during the allotted time period. The more a university collects, the higher they will be ranked.

Telemedicine provides a new future to medical care

Thanks to a new UC Davis program, 10-year-old Ian Killmer's doctor was able to perform a life-saving procedure on him under the instruction of pediatric trauma specialists 100 miles away via teleconference.
