Opinion

Guest opinion: Edward Dawkins

On Wednesday afternoon, we witnessed the rally that was held at the Vanderhoef Quad and Conference Center. And why not? With the recent, sudden and unannounced cutting of four lesser sports, the committee in charge failed miserably in every way - including the use of faulty guidelines, and an even more faulty interpretation of these guidelines.

Watering holes fascinate me. They'd probably fascinate you too, if you ever found yourself out of your gourd at some odd hour of the morning listening to David Attenborough break down the balances of life on Earth. Funny that these delicate inter-species relationships often involve some reptilian colossus crushing and drowning the weakest animal it can find. That's what it looks like to me, anyway. But I'm an English major, so what do I know.

Column: That damn bucket list

I was maliciously tackled with a by-the-day graduation countdown recently. As you can imagine, this severely annihilated my ability to pretend this isn't my antepenultimate. But it ain't mourning time yet, so sit the hell down.

Column: A free exchange

It is beyond me why many conservative thinkers still give Arizona's SB 1070 a free pass. The Republican Party is so terrified of the specter of brown immigrants, and so deluded as to the superiority of state power over federal, that its members are willing to support the legalization of racist and totalitarian measures.

Column: Hair today, gone tomorrow!

It's bathing suit season, ladies and gents. And you know what that means. You may be thinking it's time to hit the gym, but I'm thinking it's time to make a wax appointment.

Editorial: Gmail Privacy

UC Davis halted a two-month long trial of Google's Gmail earlier this month for faculty and staff due to fears regarding Google's privacy policies. However, Gmail simply has no peers and is an asset to the UC Davis faculty, staff and student body alike.

This flap on my fucking finger is killing me. It's a triangular piece of skin that's decided to lift itself off of my index finger for no reason. It's like a rogue piece of skin, deciding to forge a new path away from the fascist regime that was the corner of my nail.

Column: Say everything

I had a crisis last week when I realized that all of the contemporary Chinese-American fiction writers I can think of are immigrant women, with the exception of Ha Jin. I noticed this after I'd turned in my short story last week, told from the perspective of a Chinese-American immigrant woman talking about the Cultural Revolution.

Column: Everyone loves Big Oil

With oil still spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from the wreckage of a BP oilrig, speaking well of oil drilling seems like a losing proposal. The ruptured oil well has caused a great deal of harm to ecosystems and wildlife, and it has also considerably harmed BP and the economy in general. No wonder Big Oil has become a dirty word.

Column: Those three words

You know the three I'm talking about. We've all heard them. Some of us have no problem letting our inner emotions flower upon declaration of these words. Others fear them, terrified of their implications, connotations and meanings.

Column: Time to let go

I left my heart in San Francisco. Then it went to Texas. Now, it's in Chicago, dodging rats the size of German Shepherds and eluding the mob.

Column: Buy one get one tree

I'm standing by a Whole Earth Festival booth filled with interesting, exotic-looking jewelry. I'm debating whether or not to buy an overpriced necklace. There are approximately 15 girls surrounding the tiny tent, eager to get a glimpse at the various items on display.

Column: Daddy’s girl

I've written before about how differences of opinion between my father and I can sometimes make our political discussions … tumultuous.

Editorial: Violent games

The U.S. Supreme Court signaled last month that there may be a future for California's overturned law banning the sale of violent video games to minors.
