Two years of research were thrown out in a few days - by an 11-year-old.
Gabriel Leal, a sixth-grader at Willet Elementary School in Davis, needed to create a science project for Willet's Open House and Science Fair/Family Science Night in April. Gabriel's father, Walter Leal, a UC Davis professor of entomology, suggested that Gabriel study mosquitoes. Gabriel, however, decided to study the navel orangeworm, an agricultural pest, and its preference for nuts. Prior to Gabriel's experiment, Professor Leal's research was based on a paper published in California Agriculture stating that the NOW moth preferred almonds to other types of nuts.

The newborn foals in the campus Horse Barn are a charming vision of life in the quaint Davis flatlands. They tenderly nuzzle their mothers and wave their bristled tails in the winter breeze. Every January, these tiny foals appear in the barn. And every January, the students of the Stud Manager Internship help to create them.

For most of us, buying a new computer means two choices: a PC or a Mac, and the operating systems that come standard with each. But to a small yet growing group of dedicated people, that choice is a false dichotomy.
The Linux Users' Group of Davis has, at its core, a mission to expand awareness and use of Linux operating systems. The club will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary on Monday at the Davis Brach of the Yolo County Public Library (315 East 14th St.), from 7 to 9 p.m. (The library is closed for Martin Luther King Day but LUGOD has reserved the facility for the meeting).
Out of the 100 astronauts in the NASA space program, two of them - Stephen Robinson (1978) and Tracy Caldwell (1997) - are UC Davis graduates.
A correction in the Jan. 5 issue of The California Aggie incorrectly stated that Jeffrey Gibeling will become chair of the Council of Graduate Students. In fact, Gibeling will become chair of the Council of Graduate Schools. The Aggie regrets the error.
I was skeptical when I first heard about Beach Hut Deli, which opened last month downtown. After all, there are already a slew of sandwich options at Davis and its name is a little hokey.
But Beach Hut Deli is more than a bro'd out version of Subway. Its sandwiches are of gargantuan size, albeit more expensive than what you could order on campus. However, with a friend of similar tastes, you could split a specialty sandwich and walk out the door full.

A performing arts, cultural studies, and history medley with a twist of technology, technocultural studies offers an innovative major that is unique to UC Davis.
Based off a word not found in the English dictionary, technocultural studies is an interdisciplinary major that bridges the arts, humanities, technology and the sciences in a way so that students have hands-on experience with digital production equipment.
